Robby's NightTrue Story -- Worth Reading!!!

At the prodding of my friends, I am writing this story. My name is Mildred Hondorf. I am a former elementary school music teacher from Des Moines, Iowa.
I've always supplemented my income by teaching piano lessons-something I've done for over 30 years. Over the years I found that children have many levels of musical ability. I've never had the pleasure of having a prodigy though I have taught some talented students.
However I've also had my share of what I call "musically challenged" pupils.

One such student was Robby. Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single Mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer that students (especially boys!) begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby. But Robby said that it had always been his mother's dream to hear him play the piano. So I took him as a student. Well, Robby began with his piano lessons and from the beginning I thought it was a hopeless endeavor. As much as Robby tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel. But he dutifully reviewed his scales and some elementary pieces that I require all my students to learn. Over the months he tried and tried while I listened and cringed tried to encourage him. At the end of each weekly lesson he'd always say, "My mom's going to hear me play someday." But it seemed hopeless. He just did not have any inborn ability. I only knew his mother from a distance as she dropped Robby off or waited in her aged car to pick him up. She always waved and smiled but never stopped in. Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to pursue something else. I also was glad that he stopped coming. He was a bad advertisement for my teaching! Several weeks later I mailed to the student's homes a flyer on the upcoming recital. To my surprise Robby (who received a flyer) asked me if he could be in the recital. I told him that the recital was for current pupils and because he had dropped out he really did not qualify. He said that his mother had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing "Miss Hondorf I've just got to play!" he insisted.

I don't know what led me to allow him to play in the recital. Maybe it was his persistence or maybe it was something inside of mesaying that it would be all right. The night for the recital came. The high school gymnasium was packed with parents, friends and relatives. I put Robby up last in the program before I was to come up and thank all the students and play a finishing piece. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and I could always salvage his poor performance through my "curtain closer."
Well, the recital went off without a hitch. The students had been practicing and it showed. Then Robby came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked like he'd run an eggbeater through it. "Why didn't he dress up like the other students?" I thought. "Why didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?"Robby pulled out the piano bench and he began. I was surprised when he announced that he had chosen Mozart's Concerto #21 in C Major. I was not prepared for what I heard next. His fingers were light on the keys, they even danced nimbly on the ivories. He went from pianissimo to fortissimo. From allegro to virtuoso. His suspended chords that Mozart demands were magnificent!
Never had I heard Mozart played so well by people his age. After six and a half minutes he ended in a grand crescendo and everyone was on their feet in wild applause.
Overcome and in tears I ran up on stage and put my arms around Robby in joy. "I've never heard you play like that Robby! How'd you do it? " Through the microphone Robby explained: "Well Miss Hondorf . . .Remember I told you my Mom was sick? Well, actually she had cancer and passed away this morning And well . . . She was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play. I wanted to make it special." There wasn't a dry eye in the house that evening. As the peoplefrom Social Services led Robby from the stage to be placed into foster care, noticed that even their eyes were red and puffy and I thought to myself how much richer my life had been for taking Robby as my pupil. No, I've never had a prodigy but that night I became a prodigy. . . Of Robby's. He was the teacher and I was the pupil for it is he that taught me the meaning of perseverance and love and believing in yourself and maybe even taking a chance in someone and you don't know why.
Robby was killed in the senseless bombing of the Alfred P.Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in April of 1995.

FUNNY YOUNG WOMEN CAMP SONGS:
Willing Men Sung to "Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel"

The World Has need of Willing Men Who have the dating zeal, the work to do is here for you Put your finger on the dial

Chorus:
Put your finger on the dial, ask us out
We'll be free on friday night without a doubt
We all have work, but time to flirt,
Put your finger on the dial

Now don't stand idly looking on the fight for us is real
The work is long but must go on Put your finger on the dial
Repeat chorus

I Need a Man (to the tune of "Part of your World", from "The Little Mermaid")
Look at my smile; isn't it great?
Wouldn't you think that I'd have a date?
Lookin' at me, yeah, you'd think,
"She's got everything."

Look at my clothes; look at my face.
Just once I'd like to go to a nice place.
Fast-food and dollar matinees-They're not everything.

I've got hairspray and makeup aplenty;
I've used toothpaste and mouthwash galore.
Wanna go Dutch? I've got a twenty.
But who cares? No big deal; I want more.

I wanna be where the elders are.
I want one for my eternal companion-One who's not afraid of...
What's that word again? Oh...commitment.

In institute class you don't get too far;
Dates are required for real romancin'.
Hopin' for an engagement...
What's the word again? Ring!

A guy who is fun, a guy who is cute,
A guy who would look real good in a suit.
I'm really great; why don't I date?
I need a man!

What would I give if I could live in Salt Lake City?
What would I pay to spend a day on temple grounds?
Betcha they'd call if they weren't all just so intimidated.
Sweet young maiden-sick of waitin'-
Ready for more!

And ready to know what the couples know.
Ask'em my questions and get some answers.
What is a gentleman and why is he...
What's the word? Extinct!?

Why can't they think and see me now?
I am a woman worth more than eight cows!!
I'm really great; why don't I date?
I NEED A MAN!!

Fantasies Bring Comfort

Do you ever fantasize about stuff and it actually ends up making you feel better or it really comforts you? And you couldn't even find that comfort in real life? I've done that a lot. In fact, I just did it last night. Crazy isn't it? I love it! It always makes me feel better and it's almost like I actually experienced it. Of course it would be much better if it did happen, but then this way you can control it and get the help you truly need. Or that you think you need. Well, it works for me. And music too, it really helps to bring out your emotions and sometimes, actually, a lot of the times, for me, the music is exactly how I feel. It's kind of hard to explain, but perhaps someday I will be able to. That would be sweet.

Well until next time

Spider Dilemna

Last night there was a spider in the bathroom. A nasty, brown, sick-looking, creepy, fast-crawling, spider. I was brushing my teeth when it started to move like crazy. I was trying to keep my eye on it, as well as brush my teeth, as well as praying for something; I was rinsing out my mouth and when I looked back up, it was GONE!!! Ok, having a spider in the house is disgusting. Killing it is beyond my strength - gives me the shivers just thinking about it ugh :( But leaving it there is stupid too. Who knows where it will end up next? But the weirdest thing about it last night, was it seemed to just disappeared! Into thin air. It was this clunky spider in a white room, or at least light colored and then it was gone. POOF! Gone! I looked for it, even on the door ledge, but i was no where to be seen. Part of me is wondering if I was seeing things or hallucinating, or something like that. Because it was there and then it wasn't. Eek! I don't know what to think about it. I am slightly avoiding that bathroom. It's kind of hard when you're a guest at your sister's house and that's basically your bathroom for the stay. Not to mention, your guest bedroom is about 2 feet away. Hard to avoid that.

I will report if I find out about anything else.

Pretty Much A Perfect Day

I am currently in Utah as I write this entry. It has been a most enjoyable vacation and it's only half over. I would say that today was pretty much a perfect day. I woke up around 8, of which I used Dad's cell phone for an alarm clock, in the which I was in a deep sleep and having a very real dream; then I read Love, Stargirl for about an hour; then we watched General Conference, (by the way, the morning session seemed to fly by); then Mom and I walked to Maceys to do some grocery shopping, (It was horrible in there: LOTS of people were there, more than I've ever seen at Maceys. The traffic in the store was horrendous); Neil picked us up; we went home and I gathered up my stuff and walked over to the Peterson's house to watch the second session. It was so fun to be there again: it felt like old times. Kevin and Stephanie watching General Conference, while Austin and I goofed around which Stephanie and Kevin told us to be quiet - like in the old days. It was fun to hang out with them again. After conference, I went home and played with Peanut for a good while. Becky, Mom, and I went up to Lehi and visited with the Odds. It was good to see them and I got to tell them about my mission and Steven's too. Then we drove back to Neil's, dropped Mom off and Becky and I headed back to her place. She just put Spencer down and we are soon to be leaving to perhaps see Alvin and the Chipmunks. It's been a really great day. I'm glad.

Until next time

Easter

On Easter morning it snowed, but by the end of the day it had all melted. Here are some pictures from Easter Day:

Nervous Habits

The Monday and Tuesday after I received my mission call, were quite interesting. I seemed to be rather interested in getting rid of bumps on my head, from my ponytail, by sticking bobby pins all over. I believe it was a nervous habit, yes I do. The pictures of my hair are from Monday and I have 44 bobby pins, 1 hair clip, and 1 pony tail holder.

Don't these pictures give you the creeps? It makes me feel, ughy.

The next two pictures were from Tuesday and I have 57 bobby pins and 1 hair tie.

I remember on Tuesday I put a few in my hair and I thought to myself that I wasn't going to repeat what I did the night before. But I did; and it was worse. Every time I found a bump I got excited and I got even more excited when I found a bobby pin. Let's just say that it was TOTALLY weird and I really believe it was a way for me to remove some stress.
